Inspired by Indian Adornments

When I began this sketch, I had no clear direction in mind — all I knew was that I wanted to capture something inspired by the people from the movie Latcho Drom

Their dances and jewelry captivated me. After doing a bit more research, I discovered that the dancers in the opening scenes likely come from either Odisha or Kutch. However, I think it's more likely that they are from Kutch. Yes, both the Odisha and Kutch people are from the same country, India, but they belong to distinct regions with different cultural histories, traditions, and lifestyles.

However, there are some interesting connections, especially in terms of jewelry and other aspects of material culture, as well as some historical migration patterns.

This book captures both a personal journey and the history of a land and its people over the past thirty years.

Blending history with folklore, and stories with traditions, Shifting Sands provides a rich portrayal of the culture and craftsmanship of Kutch’s inhabitants. It offers insights into their homes, food, and, especially, their textile practices — all of which are deeply intertwined with the land itself, shaped by the vast, arid landscape that surrounds them.

Lacho Drom

Latcho Drom traces the journey of the Romani people through the vibrant music and dance of India, Egypt, Turkey, and Romania, offering a vivid portrayal of their cultural migration.
