Initially believed to be one of John White's illustrations from his 16th-century expedition to Virginia, this vibrant miniature is now recognized as the work of the French artist Jacques Le Moyne.
Contrary to earlier assumptions, the figure depicted is not a Native American, but instead represents an early inhabitant of the British Isles. The figure is identified as a member of the Picts, an ancient group who resided in what is now Scotland during the Late Iron Age and Early Medieval periods.
This shift in interpretation highlights both the historical significance of the artwork and the evolving understanding of early European and indigenous representations.
