Danae was the only daughter of King Akrisios. When her father learned of a prophecy that his death would come at the hands of his daughter's son, he imprisoned Danae in a bronze chamber underground.
However, Zeus, the god, found a way into her confinement, appearing as a golden shower and impregnating her. Danae gave birth to a son named Perseus.
When Akrisios discovered this, he placed Danae and the infant in a chest and set them adrift at sea.
